The speedway sits on a 568-acre site that once hosted the first steel mill located west of the Rocky Mountains, Kaiser Steel Mill. The mill produced the steel that helped build the Liberty ships used by the Allies to win World War II. Penske Motorsports Inc. purchased the land and completed the track in 1997.more

History

When Bristol Motor Speedway opened in 1961, it could easily have a different name and in a different location.

The first proposed site for the speedway was in Piney Flats, Tenn., seven miles south of the current location.

But, according to Carl Moore, who built the track along with Larry Carrier and R.G. Pope, the idea met local opposition. The entrepreneurs were on record stating if anyone not in favor of the construction and existence of such a facility in the small community came forward to express their opposition, they would find another location. Some local citizens did, so, the track that could have been called Piney Flats International Speedway eventually was built on a diary farm less than 10 miles to the north Hwy. 11-E in Bristol.

A year later, like many superspeedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales.more

Track History

Believing that Bill France's fledgling NASCAR just might catch on, Harold Brasington set out in the fall of 1949 to shape a 1.25-mile speedway on land that had once produced peanuts and cotton. Brasington himself often manned the controls of bulldozers and grading equipment. His plan called for a true oval, but the racetrack's design had to be changed in order to satisfy the landowner, who did not want his nearby minnow pond disturbed. The west end of the track (Turns 3 and 4) was narrowed to accommodate the fishing hole, creating Darlington's distinctive egg-shaped design.more

History

Built in 1909 as an automobile proving ground, the speedway was built as a 2.5-mile rectangle by its four founders because that was the largest track that could be constructed on the land available.

The first event was a hot-air balloon race, followed by three days of racing in August 1909. However, the crushed stone and tar track was so dangerous that work began immediately on repaving the entire surface with more than three million bricks.

The track hosted three separate race weekends in 1910, but poor attendance forced management to re-think its plans for 1911, choosing to run one large event instead.

The first 500-Mile International Sweepstakes was held on May 30, 1911, and with the exception of two world wars, remains a Memorial Day fixture.

Ray Harroun took nearly seven hours to complete the 500-mile distance in 1911, while Arie Luyendyk won the 1990 edition in a record two hours and 41 minutes.

The track and grounds deteriorated badly during World War II -- and plans were made to replace it with residential housing. But Terre Haute businessman Tony Hulman stepped in and purchased the speedway and began a series of improvements to the facility that continue to this day.

Several NASCAR teams were invited to a one-day test session at the speedway by track president Tony George in 1993, and the inaugural Brickyard 400 was held one year later.

Rumor has it that track officials have been bugging Mike Helton for a Cup date, and he has told them that the Cup schedule is currently full.

Track History

Dubbed a "Rusty Wallace Signature Series Track," Iowa Speedway is a seven-eighths-mile tri-oval located in Newton, Iowa, about 30 miles east of Des Moines, the state's capital and most populous city. Iowa Speedway opened in September 2006 with a USAR Hooters Pro Cup event and has hosted various racing series including ARCA, USAC, ASA Late Models and the IRL. NASCAR held its first event at Iowa in May 2007 with a combination Camping World (formerly Grand National) East-West Series race. On that day, a 17-year-old East Series regular Joey Logano beat Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick, a former West Series champion, for the victory.more
